Erosion and Clogged Gutters

Many people do not realize the connection between the erosion around their house, and their gutter system.  A properly operating gutter system on a home will protect the foundation and drastically reduce erosion around the base of the home.

When it rains, this gutter will quickly fill up with water and start overflowing because the downspouts are covered by debris and plant growth.  This causes water to pour down continuously around the base of your house, which causes the soil to wash away.

How Often do my Gutters Need to be Cleaned?

If you have trees near your home, you might be wondering how long it takes for your gutters to fill up with debris.  If you had them cleaned recently, how long can you stop worrying about them?

On Friday we removed enough debris to fill several wheelbarrows from just one house’s gutter system. It must have been a while since they were cleaned, right?  Actually, these gutters have already been cleaned once this year.

What if I have screens on my gutters, do I still need to get cleanings that often?  As you can see from this picture below, screens and deflectors keep the debris from going into the downspout… but at what cost?

After removing the debris that seemed to be doing no harm, we found that the wood on the house was beginning to rot away.

What condition are my gutters in?

Are they loose or coming off?  This is typically signs of wood rot. Is there standing water?  This is usually due to gutters that are pitched wrong, your foundation that has settled or simply too small of downspouts installed thus providing a great misquote breeding location. Are your gutters nailed in?  If so then they will become weak due to water leaking down the nail into the wood causing it to be loose. If your gutters or downspouts have rusting then they are galvanized and will continue to deteriorate. If your gutters have dents they are typically from tree branches or ladders damaging them.  Once joints begin to leak they become very challenging to seal permanently due to the existing sealant.  If your gutters factory finish have been painted over then they will allow dirt and mildew to build up much faster because it is not a smooth surface.
